The alley of icebergs of Newfoundland March weirder giants

Amateur photographer mark gray, who was lucky enough to live on Cape Bonavista, in the East of Newfoundland, published a fresh selection of photos of icebergs…

The alley of icebergs of Newfoundland March weirder giants
The catch of the new season – usually ice blocks begin their journey through the waters there in late spring and follow through the “alley of icebergs” a couple of months. This place is so called because the huge icicles, as if on parade, pass in front of the audience on the shore. But those who like mark gray watches them not the first year, note: new icebergs are markedly different from the previous ones.

As a creative person, photographer gray gives them captured icebergs poetic nicknames. Not all, of course, because along the coast in the harvest year are thousands of objects. Hundreds – guaranteed, so he pays attention only to the most extraordinary. Worthy to be called “Rabbit ears” for a double peak or “Secretive”, because all morning and did not come out from behind the rock, as if hiding there from the photographer.

Gray says that this year it became much more difficult to choose icebergs for photo hunting. They used to be bizarre shapes, but now everything is as if fashioned by a mad artist: twisted, split, with fresh traces of torn parts. This is the main trouble – it happens that while setting up the equipment, choose the best angle, the iceberg can suddenly split right in front of you. Nothing extraordinary from the point of view of nature, but the photographer is annoyed to start all over again.

Most icebergs come from the same place, collapsing glaciers in Western Greenland. The average age of ice in them is more than 10,000 years, the initial dimensions are often more than 50 m in height, despite the fact that the main part is always hidden under water. But in this season real giants gray found almost not saw, until Cape Bonavista have reached any “freaks” – not very big and similar on over the wreckage of the from large icebergs. Although, it is possible that the way it is. The processes of melting and destruction of the once almost monolithic ice massif significantly accelerated.

The fact that icebergs began to split more often and faster, and good and bad. The advantage is obvious – in the sea, near the active shipping routes, there will be much less dangerous ice blocks. They are as formidable in the new Millennium as they were in the time of the Titanic, which sank not very far from here. Local beverage producers and representatives of the tourism sector are also experiencing negative feelings. However, their opinion is not too weighty, besides, nothing to do with this phenomenon is still impossible. It remains only to observe or take risks.

After the introduction of fishing quotas, Newfoundland residents are trying to find new ways to make money on the environment. In ice age 10-12 thousand years a priori no pesticides, DDT, radioactive substances and all that “gave” humanity to the world because of its activities. Icebergs are fired from large-caliber rifles, then catch the broken pieces and melt the purest water in the world. At least, so it is written in advertising “iceberg beer”, which is brewed from it.
But now, when the icebergs themselves began to split by leaps and bounds, this business has become much more risky. The fall of a multi-ton block into the water generates a wave that can overturn boats and at a distance of several km. For the same reason, it became unsafe to roll tourists near the ice giants. More precisely, at times more dangerous than before – it can harm the entire direction of tourism services. Do our children and grandchildren will be able to admire the icebergs, just staying on the shore?
