The broken nail cost the tourist $ 2500, and she got off easy

A simple but instructive story about how health insurance saved nerves and money to an Australian tourist who was unaware of the horrors of treatment in the US…

The broken nail cost the tourist $ 2500, and she got off easy
And who dares blame her? 32-year-old Rachel Minaway from Sydney flew to Hawaii for the famous beaches and surfing, and not to explore the hospital rooms. On the way, she broke a nail on her hand, but did not attach any importance to it. As it turned out – the decision was wrong.

Rachel’s problem came from the fact that she was thinking like a normal sane person, without taking into account regional specifics. Flew to Hawaii, sent the Luggage to the hotel, and she – rather on the beach, swim! Vacation started! And no nasty nail, so out of place on a broken locking glove box in the car, I will not spoil. And the right thing, so what? And the beauty of you can think then, in the evening at the hotel. Error number one.

Alas, after a few hours the finger with the unfortunate nail began to hurt, and then completely numb – then Rachel realized that it was time to surrender to doctors. But the foreigner did not specify the details, but simply turned to the nearest inpatient medical center. She considered her request a trifle, more a reassurance than a desire to get serious treatment. That was the second mistake.

American doctors examined the wounded finger and issued a verdict – the nail should be removed entirely. Under local anesthesia, by all the rules, but the operation took only 31 minutes. The delighted Australian tried to fly back to the beach, but the way was blocked by a smiling Manager accompanied by a gloomy guard. Here’s the bill, Mrs. tourist, please pay. And then Rachel was surprised to learn that the nail removal cost her $ 1200!

In memory surfaced creepy stories about the high cost of American medicine. Attempts to explain gave nothing, the staff of hospital showed a tariff grid and refused to let out the girl from the building without payment. The alternative is to call the police, arrest, fine, prison or deportation. Later Rachel will understand that then made the third mistake, and under pressure signed documents. She paid the required amount, and when she returned to the hotel, she contacted her insurance company – she was compensated for the costs.

The stay was badly marred, but the worst was yet to come. On her return home to Australia, Rachel Minaway received a mountain of letters from an American hospital. It turned out that in an unknown way the bill for treatment doubled, reaching $2500. No matter that she was on the other side of the world, the hospital was demanding payment, threatening to sue. Consultation with a lawyer confirmed the worst – according to the documents Rachel received a range of medical services, not just nail removal. And, most importantly, no fraud, all within the law.

By the time Rachel was six months pregnant, she was desperate. But she was incredibly lucky – before sending to Hawaii, the girl hurriedly issued an extended version of medical travel insurance instead of the standard one. Insurance company 1Cover, without unnecessary delay, pay all the bills. According to the CEO of the organization, Richard Warburton, it is something of a professional challenge for them. American hospitals are known for their unscrupulousness, and the ability to protect customers, tourists, from financial and legal pressure from them helps to build a positive reputation.

For Rachel Minaway, in the end, everything went well. But now she does not dare to go anywhere outside the country without having full health insurance. And in the US – even more so!
