The water in lake Baikal is toxic. Who is to blame?
Lake Baikal is considered one of the main natural heritage of Russia. Deepest lake in Siberia, one of the oldest on the planet, the provision of clean drinking water for many years, but… today is most often featured in the media with the scandalous information reasons in the spirit of “Baikal porasprodali Chinese” and “factories for the bottling of drinking water to empty lake Baikal” and others.
Sensation of the last days: lake Baikal, the largest natural reservoir of fresh water on the planet, is poisoned! According to the Director of the Limnological (azerbaidzhanskogo — ed.) Institute of the Siberian branch of RAS Andrei Fedotov, Baikal water can not be drunk. The concentration of bacteria releasing toxic substances exceeded the limits of permissible values.
The fact that lake Baikal is threatened by an environmental disaster, they say and write, shoot documentaries and feature films for more than a dozen years. And now such a catastrophe has become a reality, otherwise how to evaluate the statement of Andrei Fedotov?
Traditionally: who is to blame?
There are many reasons for pollution of lake Baikal. And old, and those, about which have spoken relatively recently. One of them is named in the statement of Sergei Fedotov — large-scale forest fires in the TRANS-Baikal territory. Their number in the last decade has increased many times in the Irkutsk region. The wiring in most of the cases specially in order to cut down the forest for sale in China. The scale of these fires and uncontrolled logging is shocking, especially noticeable from the plane.
From the constant forest fires lake contaminated by ammonium, is a nutrient component, it promotes the reproduction of Spirogyra, this seaweed (simply green slime) will kill sponges — the most powerful biologicheskii filter millions of years regularly oshidashi water of lake Baikal.
Also plays an important role anthropogenic impact — that is, people living on the coast and in the cities located near the rivers that feed lake Baikal. In the lake dump sewage almost all along the coast, where people live. Ecosystems that have developed here for many thousands of years in clean water are dying rapidly. Lake Baikal it is necessary to construct at least 18 modern sewage treatment plant that it didn’t drain their sewage. For example, here flows the Selenga river, the waters of which are drains from the treatment facilities of the city of Ulan-Ude. Scientists say that only in it by the most conservative estimates got over the permissible standards 13100 tons of nitrates, 702 tons of nitrites and 1900 tons of ammonium.
There are several plants for bottling Baikal water. They take less water than the volume that can harm. But their construction was carried out in the coastal zone of lake Baikal, which could not but cause damage to the ecosystem. In addition, all of them have production waste and have an additional burden on the fragile ecosystem of the lake. Therefore, environmentalists recently and ganged up on the construction of another plant by the Chinese. The last known of the ecology especially not stand on ceremony ever, leaving behind only “scorched” earth. Thanks to the media hype, the construction of the plant was stopped. Special thanks to Sergey Zverev, who actively advocated the termination of construction.

Among other reasons, which have long been known — the disastrous consequences of the activities of the pulp and paper mill (pulp and paper mill) in Baikalsk. Since 2013, the company is not functioning. But we should not forget that the Central Bank began its work in 1966, against its construction was vigorously protested by the public, well-known scientists and writers spoke. Representatives of the then government made smart faces, talked about the state interests, about the complete safety of the plant for lake Baikal, and the Central Bank was built. Now we know — for half a century the plant dropped into the lake about ten tons of dioxin (data from the Institute of Geochemistry SB RAS). For reference: dioxin is deadly to living organisms (including humans) at a concentration of 0.001 grams.

And finally, the reason, which we learned recently, from the mouth of the special representative of the President for environmental protection Sergei Ivanov. In the accident on lake Baikal, as stated by the special representative, guilty… tourists. On the Baikal coast, tons of garbage have accumulated, for this reason, the tourist flow will have to be limited. A surprising finding, especially given all of the above on forest fires and tonnes dumped in the lake of dioxin.
Tourists, they are…,
Yes, the tourist boom in recent years on lake Baikal is an obvious fact. Only for two months of 2019, 50 thousand tourists, Russian and foreign, visited Baikal. According to Travel Russian News Agency, this is twice more than in the same period last year. But does it follow that tons of garbage on the Baikal coast is completely the fault of sleazy tourists?
